Latino Legislative Summit on Health Disparities
October 23-25, 2009
The Biltmore Hotel
1200 Anastasia Avenue
Coral Gables, Florida
Despite immense advances in health technology and pharmaceutical science, the nation’s second largest population group continues to experience vast health disparities and poor health outcomes.
The Latino community faces a health care crisis in which millions are uninsured or underinsured,
while healthcare costs and the cost of coverage continue to rise. State legislators, as stewards of state government, oversee a vast range of health and health care systems and serve in key decision making roles to address policy issues related to healthcare, prevention of disease and health promotion.
Recent economic trends have compelled states to further examine the true price of health, comprised
of both the cost of disease management to government entities, and the cost of healthcare coverage to individuals, families, and employers. State recognition of health and health care inequity, and state government’s leadership to address health disparities, in concert with municipal and local government, has given rise to the tenure for federal healthcare reform. Given the current economic climate,
Latino state legislators have the opportunity to capitalize on the momentum of the federal health
reform dialogue and enhance state leadership to address health disparities.
The NALEO Latino Legislative Summit on Health Disparities will provide Latino state legislators an opportunity to enhance their understanding of health disparities and the intersection between state
and federal health and economic policy.
The Summit’s program will specifically cover:
- Health and Health Care Economics
- Federal Health Care Reform and Implications to State Healthcare Access Policy
- Capturing a Share of the Growing Healthcare Workforce
- Emerging Health Policy Issues: Latina HIV/AIDS, Children’s Oral Health,
Healthy Community Design
The Summit will assemble national experts and advocates to develop strategies and solutions to address health disparities. State legislators will receive information on the latest research and best practices; exchange legislative ideas; learn techniques for increasing funding for programs in their respective states and regions; and have the opportunity to identify and network with colleagues and experts on health policy from throughout the nation.
Latino state legislators are encouraged to take advantage of this timely opportunity. There is no fee to attend the Summit for current NALEO members. If necessary, the NALEO Educational Fund will provide those NALEO members who attend the Summit with air travel to and from Miami, Florida, as well as a two-night hotel stay and meals as part of the Summit.
