NALEO National Institute on School Governance: The Relevancy of Local Leadership Phoenix, Arizona | March 5-7, 2010 School board remain mostly overlooked in national discussions of K-12 policy. This is the case as the quality of leadership in public education has become a priority among policymakers, philanthropists, and education researchers. Pressure continues to build on school districts to close achievement gaps, increase high school graduation rates, and prepare more students for college and careers. With more than 14,500 school boards across country, local leaders often find themselves responding to the most immediate needs of their community, while simultaneously reacting to state and federal mandates. Effective governance and the relevancy of local leadership to attend a timely convening on school governance to address the current state of education for all students.
