NALEO National Institute
for Newly Elected Officials

November 20-23, 2008

Kellogg Conference Hotel, Gallaudet University

Washington, DC

This Institute provides newly elected Latino officials with the opportunity to develop new skills and network with colleagues from all over the country. In addition to learning how to launch their careers in public service, participants will also hear local and national experts speak on specific topics, such as:
  • Latino Leadership - Participants will hear from elected officials on their experiences and on important policy issues affecting constituents.
  • Media Management - Participants will learn how to manage radio, TV, print, and electronic media.
  • Budgets and Public Finance - Participants will gain an understanding of budgeting practices and public finance to further their priorities.
  • Staffing - Participants will learn the importance of proper staffing.
All Latino officials elected to their first term in public office as of January 2007 are
encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. Interested officials should fill out the
Institute application form and return it to the NALEO Educational Fund with supporting materials by October 10, 2008. For officials elected on November 4, 2008, the deadline is November 7, 2008. The cost per selected applicant is $200, which includes the $100
annual NALEO membership fee; or $100 for current paid NALEO members.

The NALEO Educational Fund provides selected applicants with transportation to and
from Washington, D.C., as well as room and board, while at the Institute.

Questions about the Institute should be directed to
Jose Carrillo at (213) 747-7606, or email at jcarrillo@naleo.org.
