This Institute provides newly elected Latino officials with the opportunity to develop new skills and network with colleagues from all over the country. In addition to learning how to launch their careers in public service, participants will also hear local and national experts speak on specific topics, such as:
- Latino Leadership - Participants will hear from elected officials on their experiences and on important policy issues affecting constituents.
- Media Management - Participants will learn how to manage radio, TV, print, and electronic media.
- Budgets and Public Finance - Participants will gain an understanding of budgeting practices and public finance to further their priorities.
- Staffing - Participants will learn the importance of proper staffing.

All Latino officials elected to their first term in office as of January 2005 are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. Interested officials should fill out the Institute application form and return it to the NALEO Educational Fund with supporting materials by October 6, 2006.
The cost per selected participant is $200, which includes the $100 annual NALEO membership fee, or $100 for current paid NALEO members. The NALEO Educational Fund provides participants transportation to and from Washington, D.C., as well as room and board, while at the Institute. The NALEO Educational Fund is the leading organization that empowers Latinos to participate fully in the American political process, from citizenship to public service. As a national, non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization, the NALEO Educational Fund utilizes its network of more than 5,000 governmental, political, and business leaders to conduct civic affairs projects, training and technical assistance activities, and information dissemination on behalf of the Latino community.
