Registering to vote is only the first step in being an active part of U.S. democracy. While individuals registered to vote have the right to cast a ballot there are no requirements under law that compel registered voters to vote. Only the total number of votes cast not the number of registered voters can decide the outcome of an election.
I Don't Know Where To Vote?
- Every voter is assigned to cast a ballot at a temporary polling place, set up to function on Election Day. Your polling place is assigned based on the address listed on your voter registration. Polling places are located in the immediate community, often housed in local community centers, churches, schools, or private residences.
- If you have moved since you registered, your polling place may have changed. Check with your Election office.
- To find your polling place you may contact your local elections official. Polling place locations are also often listed in official sample ballots or voter registration certificates sent to voters by their local elections official.
Will I Need To Provide Any Information at the Polls?
- Every state has adopted different requirements governing who will be required to present identification on Election Day. In some states, all registered voters will be required to present identification at the polls. Many other states will only require first-time voters provide identification before casting a ballot.
- It is important to remember, however, that registered voters who are unable to produce an acceptable form of identification at the time of casting a ballot may still cast a provisional ballot. In many cases an eligible voter may cast a provisional ballot and later produce an acceptable form of identification to elections officials. If you will be unable to produce identification on Election Day contact your elections officials before Election Day.
- ID requirements may vary for every state. Listed below are commonly accepted forms of Identification:
