* Applicants who applied before October 1, 2008 can choose between the two tests if their interview is scheduled between that date and October 1, 2009.  
If the applicant applies on or after October 1, 2008, the applicant will have to take the new re-designed test.   If an applicant’s interview is scheduled after October 1, 2009, he or she must take the new test, regardless of the date of application.
 
** Under immigration law, certain older applicants with lengthy legal permanent residence are exempt from the English-language requirement, and can take the civics test in their native language.
