About the Naturalization Process
Note: The time that a naturalization application is processed from begining to end may vary from applicant to applicant.

Timeline
Month 1	Complete all necessary documents.
	Take 2 passport photographs.
	Once application is completed it should be mailed along with: Your two passport-size photographs, copies of your permanent residency card, license or identification card, and social security card.
	Mail to the appropriate USCIS processing center in your area.
	Include your check or money order in the amount of $400 made out the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Month 2	USCIS should mail a notice verifying the receipt of your application.

Month 4-6	You should receive an appointment for your interview/exam.
	During that time you are responsible to prepare for the intervie exam. You must demonstrate a basic ability to speak, read and write English, and a basic knowledge of U.S. Government and history.
	You must be attached to the principles of the United States Constitution and have a favorable disposition toward the United States.
	You will be notified after the interview whether you passed or failed the interview. If your background check has been completed, you will be informed if you have successfully met the requirements to become a U.S. Citizen.

Month 7-9	You should receive your Oath ceremony appointment.
	Upon taking the oath ceremony you become a Citizen.

Requirements for Applying

You must be at least 18 years old.
You must be a legal permanent resident for at least (5) years.
You may apply after completing three years as a legal permanent resident, and if you have been living with and married to a U.S. Citizen, and if the spouse has been a citizen for those three years.
You should be able to read, write, speak, and understand basic English. Persons meeting age and disability requirements are exempt.
You should have basic knowledge of U.S. History and U.S. Government
The applicant must be willing to support and defend the principles of the U.S. Constitution and the laws of the United States.

Application Forms and Materials

If you are over the age of 18, you need to complete the N-400 Application.

If you are under the age of 18 and at least one parent is a U.S. Citizen, you need to complete the N-600 Application.

If you are an adopted child of a U.S. Citizen you need to complete the N-643 application.
