NALEO Convenes School Board Members
to Strategize on Budget Shortfalls

Obama Administration Officials to Give Details on Stimulus Funds for Education

LOS ANGELES, CA The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, the nation’s preeminent Latino leadership organization, will convene a group of the nation’s school board members for a budget training at it’s National Institute on School Governance: Serving Our Students in Troubled Economic Times, March 6-8, 2009, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The purpose of this three-day intensive seminar is to enhance participants’ knowledge of budgets and increase their ability to make critically important policy decisions in challenging economic times.   The Institute will enable school board members to learn more how to analyze district budgets critically and how to identify sources of funding and spending.  Additionally, the Institute will present participants with creative solutions for addressing budget challenges in their districts.

As part of the upcoming Institute, participants will meet with officials from the Obama Administration to discuss the recently passed federal economic stimulus package.  This information will assist them in plans for receiving these funds and investing them to meet the most immediate needs of schools and students.

“In these tough economic times, school districts across the country are facing critical decisions related to their budgets,” said Cynthia Matus Morriss, Chair of the National Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members and Board Member for the NALEO Educational Fund. “Learning about creative budget solutions as well as developing plans for the stimulus package funds will go a long way in ensuring that my board makes the right budget decisions and have the greatest impacts on improving our schools and student achievement.”

“The professional development we provide to our members is more important today than ever before,” said Arturo Vargas, Executive Director of the NALEO Educational Fund.  “With budget cuts and limited resources, many elected officials lack opportunities to learn about issues and hear from experts about potential policy solutions.  The NALEO Educational Fund is filling this gap by providing its members with the skills and information needed to ensure they can effectively serve their constituents and communities,” he concluded.
