LOS ANGELES – The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, (NALEO), today congratulated San Antonio, Texas Mayor-elect, Julian Castro, on his decisive victory in the recent mayoral election.
“NALEO congratulates Julian Castro on his election as Mayor of San Antonio, the seventh
largest city in America,” said NALEO President Mary Herrera. “He joins the growing numbers
of Latinos providing leadership for all Americans in states, cities, towns and villages across our
nation.”
Julian Castro was first elected at the age of 26 to the San Antonio City Council and served from
2001 to 2005 in District 7, where he established himself as a leader on issues of economic
development, education, and environmental protection. In 2005, he ran unsuccessfully for San
Antonio Mayor, but continued his community work and reemerged as a viable candidate in 2009.
Julian, a native of San Antonio, holds an undergraduate degree from Stanford University and a
law degree from Harvard Law School. His twin brother Joaquin Castro serves in the Texas
House of Representatives.
“Mayor-elect Castro is part of a successful political family in Texas, and he exemplifies a newer,
younger generation of Latinos poised to lead our nation and our growing young Latino
population,” President Herrera added. “The die has been cast and we expect that over the next
decade, many more Latinos will emerge as viable candidates to lead our nation’s largest cities.”
