LATINO VOTERS CRUCIAL IN KEY MIDTERM RACES

WASHINGTON, DC The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund released the following statement regarding the role of Latino voters in several extremely competitive races this midterm election:

“Based on analysis of polling data from a variety of sources, the NALEO Educational Fund believes that the Latino vote was a critical component in several closely-watched races in Election 2010:

  • In Nevada, Latino voters were key in giving a crucial victory to Senate Majority Leader Harry
Reid (D), in his reelection campaign against Sharron Angle (R).

  • In one of the most hotly contested races in the nation, polling data suggest Latino voters gave
Sen. Michael Bennet (D) the upper hand over Ken Buck (R).

  • In California, Latino voters were major players in two big races: Democrat Jerry Brown’s
successful matchup against Republican Meg Whitman in the gubernatorial contest, and
U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer’s (D) reelection victory over Republican Carly Fiorina.

The NALEO Educational Fund projected 6.5 million Latinos voted on November 2nd, and preliminary election results suggest that number may well have been exceeded. As in 2008, when Latinos played a decisive role in reshaping the political landscape and the outcome of the Presidential election, Latino voters displayed their growing political strength this November 2. It is clear Latino voters matter and make a difference, and that candidates must invest in Latino voter outreach in order to succeed.
