LOS ANGELES, CA —The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund issued the following statement regarding the election of Rep. Charles A. Gonzalez (D- Texas) as chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) for the 112th Congress:
“The NALEO Educational Fund congratulates Rep. Charles Gonzalez (D-TX) for his unanimous election to lead the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in the new congressional session.
Rep. Gonzalez is a champion of the community and committed to ensuring that Latino voices are heard in Congress. He is a valued friend of the NALEO Educational Fund and we look forward to continuing to work with him in the new congressional session. Rep. Gonzalez succeeds Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), who was the first Puerto Rican woman to preside over the CHC. The NALEO Educational Fund thanks Rep. Velázquez for her service and we have no doubt her leadership on issues of interest to the Latino community will remain unabated.
The NALEO Educational Fund also congratulates Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX), elected as CHC’s 1st Vice Chair, Rep. Ben Luján (D-NM), elected as 2nd Vice Chair, and Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-CA), elected as Whip.”
The two-year term for Rep. Gonzalez begins next January. Rep. Gonzalez has been a member of Congress since 1999, representing the 20th congressional district, which includes more than half of the city of San Antonio. His father, the late Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez, was a founding member of the CHC.
