NALEO CONVENES ELECTED OFFICIALS IN NATION'S CAPITOL
FOR LATINO EDUCATION SUMMIT
Officials Consider Strategies to Close Academic Achievement Gap for Latino Students

WASHINGTON, DC -The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, the nation’s preeminent Latino leadership organization, will convene around 50 Latino elected officials, including state legislators, municipal officials, community college trustees and school board members from across the country at the group’s 4th Annual National Summit on the State of Latino Education, taking place September 22-25, 2008, in Washington, D.C.  The event is open to the media.

The Summit is a three-day intensive seminar in which elected officials participate in informational panels, working sessions and strategy groups designed to enhance their knowledge of education issues.  Participants will have access to the nation’s leading policy experts from the public, private and non-profit sectors and will engage in structured discussions on the state of Latino education.  The Summit will feature insight from national leaders and organizations on the latest education trends, research, policy recommendations, promising practices and model programs for accelerating the academic success of Latino students.

Immediately prior to this year’s Summit, Latino state legislators from throughout the United States will participate in a Legislative Hearing on Pre-K and the Early Grades on Capitol Hill, where they will hear new research from the nation’s leading experts on Latinos and early childhood education.  The hearing is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the potential of an approach focusing on high-quality Pre-K through 3rd grade programs to close persistent school readiness and achievement gaps for Latino students.

The Legislative Hearing on Pre-K and the Early Grades and the 4th Annual National Summit on the State of Latino Education are sponsored by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Foundation for Child Development, Pre-K Now, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and State Farm Insurance Companies.

The National Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) and the National Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members are convening partners of these events.
