NALEO PRAISES SENATE CONFIRMATION OF
THOMAS PEREZ FOR TOP
DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE CIVIL RIGHTS POSITION

LOS ANGELES, CA - The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Senate confirmation of Thomas Perez to serve as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice:

“The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) congratulates Thomas Perez on his confirmation as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice.

“Mr. Perez has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to civil rights and is exceptionally qualified for the job ahead of him. The Department of Justice has important responsibilities to enforce our nation’s civil rights laws and to combat unfair discrimination. Today’s confirmation by the U.S. Senate is a critical step forward to ensure that the Department carries out these responsibilities effectively. The agency and our nation will benefit from the leadership and dedication Mr. Perez will provide in upholding the mission of the Civil Rights Division.

“We are grateful to Majority Leader Harry Reid and the other Senators who played key leadership roles in shepherding this confirmation vote through the Senate. We also commend the Senators who voted in favor of Mr. Perez, and recognized the extensive skills and experience that he will bring to protecting the civil rights of all Americans.

“If our democracy is to remain vital and responsive, we must eliminate unfair barriers in the electoral process and ensure full access to civic participation. We look forward to working with Mr. Perez and the Civil Rights Division to achieve these important goals.”
