NEWLY ELECTED LATINO OFFICIALS HEAD TO NATION'S CAPITAL FOR PUBLIC SERVICE BOOTCAMP

Three-Day Training Prepares Newly Elected Officials to Serve in Public Office

LOS ANGELES, CA The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, the nation’s preeminent Latino leadership organization, hosted 60 freshman public servants at its National Institute for Newly Elected Officials this week.  The Institute aims to help newly elected officials acquire the skills necessary for effective governance and promotes the development of professional networks among colleagues nationwide.

“Latinos made history with unprecedented voter turnout in November, but they also helped reshape the political establishment by getting themselves elected to public office,” said Arturo Vargas, Executive Director of the NALEO Educational Fund.  “Now it’s time to leverage the community’s growing political power into powerful, effective governance.”

The Institute is a one-of-a-kind training opportunity for newly elected officials serving at all levels.  Sessions are tailored for each level of government and offer participants professional development opportunities related to public finance, policy, ethics and media management.

“This is an incredibly exciting and historic time to be involved in government.  The Institute offers a ‘nuts and bolts’ approach
to beginning a career in public service,” said NALEO President Adolfo Carrión, Bronx Borough President.  “Participants will begin a journey with NALEO of continued learning, growth and building professional networks that will enhance their policymaking skills.”

Institute participants come from across the country.  They include 16 state legislators, 24 county and municipal officials and 18 school board members.  “These officials reflect the diversity not just of the Latino community, but of the country,” added Texas State Representative Rafael Anchía, Chairman of the NALEO Educational Fund.  “They represent diverse cities such as Miami, Phoenix, Hartford and Salt Lake City.  That’s another sign of the growing political maturity and breadth of the Latino community.”

The Institute is made possible by the generous support of Title Sponsor AT&T and Investor Partners Altria Group, Inc., Entravision Communications Corporation, GlaxoSmithKline, HSBC – North America, PG&E Corporation, Southwest Airlines, Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc., and Univision Communications Inc.
