Martinez poised to become first Latino to serve as RNC General Chairman
Los Angeles, California –– Today the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) commended President George Bush on his recommendation of United States Senator Mel Martinez to serve as the next General Chairman of the Republican National Committee. In this capacity, Senator Martinez will be the face of the Republican Party, focusing on fundraising, outreach and travel to promote the GOP agenda.
“The recommendation of Senator Mel Martinez to serve as the next General Chairman of the Republican National Committee is a historic milestone for the Latino community. If confirmed by the Republican National Committee, Martinez becomes the first Latino to hold this position. His nomination by President Bush is a testament to the contributions and political influence Latinos hold in the United States. It is a reflection of Latinos as a permanent part of the nation’s political landscape,” said Arturo Vargas, Executive Director of NALEO.
Currently, Martinez serves as Florida’s thirty-third United States Senator and took his place in the history books as the first Cuban-American to serve in the U.S. Senate. “Martinez’s background and experience makes him highly qualified to serve as General Chairman of the RNC. He is an example of the high caliber of Latinos in the United States that are currently serving our nation in the highest leadership positions of public office,” added Vargas. “NALEO congratulates Senator Martinez on his nomination to serve as the next RNC General Chairman and is inspired by his participation in appointed office.”
NALEO is a non-partisan membership organization whose constituency includes the nation’s more than 6,000 elected and appointed officials.
