LOU CORREA WINS BID TO BECOME FIRST LATINO
STATE SENATOR FROM CALIFORNIA’S ORANGE COUNTY
NALEO Educational Fund provides updated profile of Latinos in State Senates |
Los Angeles, California ––With virtually all ballots counted, Orange County Supervisor Lou Correa (D) has won his bid against Lynn Daucher (R) to represent California’s 34th State Senate District, according to election results provided by the Orange County Registrar of Voters. Initial results compiled immediately after Election Day indicated that Daucher had a slight lead in the race, but a tally of outstanding ballots now shows Correa receiving 50.2% of the votes. According to media reports, Lynn Daucher has conceded the election to Correa.
Arturo Vargas, Executive Director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, stated “We congratulate Lou Correa on his election victory. He has demonstrated his commitment to public service through his work in the California State Assembly and on the Orange County Board of Supervisors. As the first Latino to serve in the California State Senate from Orange County, his election represents another political milestone for our community.”
A table with updated information on Latinos in State Senates throughout the nation is set forth below. Prior to the November 2006 election, there were 51 Latino Democrats and 9 Latino Republicans serving in State Senates. As a result of the election, there will now be 50 Latino Democrats and 9 Latino Republicans in State Senates.
