House Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi selection praised as an inspired appointment to our nation’s most critical committee |
Washington, DC ––The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials today praised the decision by House Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi to appoint U.S. Representative Silvestre Reyes (TX, 16th District) to chair the House Intelligence Committee.
Chairman designate Reyes has an extensive background in law enforcement and national security issues and has served on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence
since the Spring of 2001. The work of the committee is critical to the security of our nation as it has oversight jurisdiction for all of the intelligence organizations of the United States.
"Speaker-elect Pelosi's inspired choice for the chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee means that the leadership of one of the 110th Congress’ most critical committees
will be in very able hands," stated Arturo Vargas, Executive Director of NALEO. Representative Reyes' appointment to the chairmanship is also a significant advancement in the political development of the Latino community. This appointment means that Latino members of Congress will head at least two full Committees in the next Congress. U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez is expected to be named to head the House Committee on Small Business.
