The Edward R. Roybal Award for Outstanding Public Service is presented annually to honor individuals who have distinguished themselves as devoted public servants to the nation and to the Latino community. The award pays tribute to the organization’s founder and President Emeritus, the late Congressman Edward R. Roybal.
NALEO’s 2015 awardee, Representative Xavier Becerra, has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in his efforts to increase opportunities for Latinos, and promoting issues affecting our nation’s working families.
Throughout his tenure in public office, the Representative has tirelessly sought to improve Social Security programs for the Latino community, combat poverty among the working poor, and strengthen the Medicare system, ensuring its long-term viability.
First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992, Representative Becerra currently serves as Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, and is a member of the Committee on Ways And Means. As Chairman of the Democratic Caucus, Representative Becerra wields a strong voice in House Democratic leadership, helping to set priorities and drive the legislative decision-making process.
Representative Becerra also serves on the Smithsonian Board of Regents, a distinguished panel of 17 men and women who oversee the Smithsonian Institution’s expansive collection. In 2011, he was appointed to serve on the Smithsonian's National Museum of African-American History and in this role, has led a decade-long effort to establish the National Museum of the American Latino to commemorate the rich history of the American Latino experience.
Prior to his election to Congress, Representative Becerra served one term in the California Legislature as the representative of the 59th Assembly District in Los Angeles County. He is a former Deputy Attorney General with the California Department of Justice.
Raised by working-class parents, Representative Becerra was the first in his family to graduate from college. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Stanford University and was awarded his Juris Doctorate from Stanford Law School in 1984.
The Representative’s efforts to improve the quality of life for the Latino community and increasing opportunities for a new generation of Latino leaders exemplify the spirit of service of the late Congressman Roybal. NALEO is pleased to honor a distinguished Latino public servant whose leadership and work on behalf of the American people upholds the values of our great nation.
