On behalf of the NALEO Educational Fund, we extend an invitation for you to attend the NALEO Education Leadership Initiative (NELI) Policy Institute on Teacher Quality scheduled to take place October 13-15, 2006, at the W Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.
This marks the first time that the NALEO Educational Fund will hold an Institute in Georgia, a state that is experiencing tremendous growth in its Latino population.
The objective of this Policy Institute is to promote your understanding of the issue of teacher quality. This is a timely and critical issue in the nation’s schools and will continue to be a key factor in closing the educational achievement gap for Latino students. The objectives of this Institute are to promote your understanding of teacher quality as a vital achievement factor, to generate your participation with national organizations working on teacher quality issues, and to apply these understandings toward your decision-making roles as a board member. In addition, we hope that your new familiarity with teacher quality issues will leverage your influence with legislators who draft policy that affects the achievement levels of Latino students in your communities.
If you are interested in attending the Institute, please fill out the enclosed registration form and return it to the NALEO Educational Fund. Once we receive the form indicating your interest in attending the Institute, we will send you additional information. Space is limited, as we are offering this Institute to elected officials from around the country.
Please note that there is no fee to attend the Institute for current, paid NALEO members. To join NALEO or to renew your membership, click here to download a membership application. Complimentary lodging (two-night stay) and travel are available to you if you are unable to obtain funding from your office.
Please contact Eric Wagner at the NALEO Educational Fund at (213) 747-7606 or at ewagner@naleo.org for further details.
We look forward to seeing you at the Institute and working with you to improve the state of education for Latino students in the country.
ABOUT THE NALEO INSTITUTE ON TEACHER QUALITY
Teacher quality is the foremost factor in closing the educational achievement gap for Latino students in the United States. Teacher quality exceeds the importance of parents’ educational level, socioeconomic status, English language facility, and peer pressure. The quality of teaching is so critical for student academic success that local decision-makers, school administrators, State legislators and State-level school officials should incorporate it into every serious effort to improve the academic achievement of Latino and all other students. Programs and activities should be coordinated across levels so that a clear and coherent policy valuing of teacher quality emerges.
The upcoming NELI Institute on Teacher Quality in October 2006 promises to achieve the following objectives for participating school board members and state legislators:
