The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO)
was founded in 1976 as a non-profit, non-partisan membership organization
of the nation's Latino elected and appointed officials and their supporters. Since
NALEO's inception, the number of Latino elected leaders has increased significantly.
In 1984, there were 3,128 Latino elected officials. Thie year, the NALEO
Directory of Latino Elected Officials lists over 5,500 officials across the country.
With a constituency of over 6,000 elected and appointed officials nationwide,
NALEO is the leading national organization focused on increasing and promoting
Latino political empowerment. Our membership forms a network of leaders throughout
the United States dedicated to providing strong leadership and Latino participation
in the decisions that affect us all.
